Last fall I thought that taking a class on something I know nothing about might end a creative drought. So I signed up for The Ties that Bind at Bemis Art School in Colorado Springs. It was a bookbinding class taught by the funny and talented Jillian Jacob Murphy.
There is also intrinsic value in making yourself a more interesting person. For instance, if you are stuck next to a brain surgeon, on a flight to Cairo, you exhaust what you know about brain surgery in approximately five minutes. Unless you too happen to be a brain surgeon, then you're just talking shop. So ask yourself, "What kind of obscure things do I do to make myself more interesting"? Aside from racists and serial killers there is hardly a group of people you can't benefit from knowing in some capacity.
We spent six weeks learning the Japanese stitch and the Coptic stitch. There are some excellent tutorials on You Tube. My attempts to teach would be clumsy.
