It was a 'sweats, no make-up' day when Bonnie and I got together to work on Karen Burniston's Gift Card Holder, our week 5 project. That's the secret phrase when we spend a serious day in the studio. I was so happy, to once again, create with the Pop-Up Dies. When I was a little girl my Great-Grandmother used to make Christmas garlands and rag rugs out of fabric scraps. She was raised during the depression and wasted nothing. I used the same theme on this project. I dug through my ribbon and tied 'ribbon scraps' to each side of the GCH. Traditionally, garlands were made out of pine, spruce, and cedar. During the Victorian times corn husks, orange and scarlet pods, flowers, fruits, and berries were added. Now that everything can be purchased so cheaply we don't make much by hand anymore. Using a few decorative ribbon scraps makes it easy to create a festive mix of textures and colors; a little bit of history brought back to life.
Supplies: Sizzix Bigz XL Die #656740-Gift Card Holder 3-D (Pop-Up) by Karen Burniston, S.E.I. Wintersong Christmas paper, brown craft paper, ribbon scraps, twine, wood beads.
Instructions: cut 6x6 card from brown craft paper. Cut 2 squares from Christmas paper that are 1/4" smaller than card and adhere to inside. Attach GCH to card according to die instructions. Tie ribbon to each side of GCH. Each piece of ribbon was approximately 4" long, that left plenty of room to trim ribbon. I used 12 pieces on each side but you could use more or less depending on how 'full' you want your garland to be. After every 2-3 pieces push the strips down the side. Add greeting or gift card. Add twine for closure.

Very pretty and great use of ribbon scraps!!!

T-bird! I love this! What a great idea to use the ribbon this way and it really shows off the arches. You are a master, my friend! Thanks for using my die, even though I'm insane with jealousy that I didn't get to come to the sweats/nomakeup extravacraftza. (See what I did there?)
